Crabgrass is perhaps the single most problematic weeds that you would find in your lawn. You can take certain measures that would allow to keep crabgrass in control and not to let it escalate into a major problem. We are going to have a look at some of the suggestions that you can follow for crabgrass control.
1. The very first suggestion is a very generic one. You must understand that weed control depends on a lot on the health of your lawn. The healthier your lawn would be the better it would be in a position to fight weeds. The same goes for crabgrass control also. Your grass cover must be thick enough to cover the complete breadth of the lawn. If it is able to shade the crabgrass, it would not allow the crabgrass to grow.
2. Crabgrass control would also depend on your promptness. You should try to eliminate crabgrass the moment you find it in your lawn. It is a special characteristic of weeds especially crabgrass to grow very quickly. So, if you think that the growth of crabgrass is too minor to be bothered with, you would soon find it growing to a full blown grass patch, to your dismay. So, neglect.
3. And once you have removed the crabgrass, you should mulch the lawn soil. It would help to remove any roots that might have remained in the soil. If you don’t mulch, the remaining root would again develop into crabgrass and the problem would again crop up.
4. When it comes to mowing, you should not mow your grass very low. It would increase the amount of sunlight being received by them and as such would also trigger their growth. Mowing at two and half to three inches would do the job of crabgrass control.
5. Before removing crabgrass you should heavily water the area. It would loosen up the soil and as such you would not have much difficulty in uprooting crabgrass.
6. Once again on the topic of crabgrass roots. When you uproot the crabgrass, take extra precautions to uproot it completely. There must not be any remaining roots in the soil. Crabgrass is one of the most difficult weeds to control because of its tenacity. It can grow in any condition.
7. Most of the people make use of herbicides for crabgrass control. Actually the difficulty of crabgrass control induces them to take the easier and quicker route. But use of herbicides must be the last option. If its herbicides, it would certainly affect other plants also. So, you should be very careful with its use.
8. And yes, with crabgrass control you should also take care of yourself. Always remember to use gloves while using chemicals and fertilizers.
