Lawn Care – Fertilizing

Lawn care and fertilizing go together like soup and sandwich. You can not have a nice lawn without fertilizing. It helps keep your lawn healthy, have better color and makes it thicker and weed free.

To start with fertilizers contain 3 main ingredients. Nitogen, phoshate, and potash. You need the correct balance of them to keep your lawn healthy and green. I like to use a fertilizer that has a higher content of nitrogen. It makes for fast growth, a nice green color and makes it thick. Of course you still need strong root growth and storage capacity for recovery. And that is where the phosphate and potash come in.

If you really want to do the job correctly, you should get a soil test. Then you can put the fertilizer down in the exact amount needed. If you put too much down, you could have runoff that could affect our environment. You may also have some decieving growth that is out of balance. Just because it looks nice, doesn’t always mean that it is healthy. The root system is just as important.

And always read the directions and follow them carefully. Some fertilizers contain chemicals that kill weeds or keep them from coming up. This may not be good for your shubs. You may want to pick a day that is not windy. And if you do not have irrigation, a day when it is going to rain later. It is good to water it in good after application.

In another article we will go over a fertilizing schedule. For now I have a video for you with some information about lawn care and fertilizing.
