Lawn Weed Control

dandelions Lawn Weed ControlWeeds can be a constant battle when trying to create your dream lawn. Correct lawn weed control is essential, if you want to win the war! If left unchecked these rascals can take your lawn over and kill all of the grass. It is much easier to attack them and stay on the offensive!

Broadleaf weeds are the most common of all weeds found in the lawn. And they are the worst. They will take all of the nutrients and water from the grasses around them, eventually killing them. They will overtake all of your hard work if you do not address them.

The main problem with weeds is that they multiply and spread quickly. Sort of like illegal immigrants, first you see just a couple, then they are everywhere. Once they make themselves at home in your lawn, they are hard to get rid of.

Some weeds are hidden. In your lawn weed control battle, it is hard to fight what you don’t see. Some get cut off when mowing and others just blend in with your lawn. You may need to examine your lawn closely to make sure that it is weed free.

There are several different ways to get rid of weeds. Some people pull them up by hand. Now if you do this and you do not get the whole root system, you are just wasting your time. The best thing is to identify the weeds and get a spray to kill them. Depending on how severe your problem is, you can either do it with a small hand held sprayer or maybe a backpack sprayer. If there are a lot you may need a sprayer for the back of your riding mower.I got a trick from my father-in-law. I keep a spray bottle loaded with weed killer and go out in my yard once every couple of weeks and spot spray. They are easier to kill before they take over!

A couple of words of caution here. Lawn weed control is not supposed to include killing shrubs or grasses. So read and follow the directions to the letter. Do not spray on a windy day. Make sure that you know how water affects the chemicals. Know what the weather is and when your irrigation system is coming on.

And of course the best thing in lawn weed control is PREVENTION! Make sure that you are using a preemergent in the early spring and a lawn weed control fertilizer in your second application in the later part of April. Make sure that you are watering DEEP and letting your lawn dry out in between waterings. Do not cut your lawn too short. And leave the clippings on your lawn. And make sure that your PH level is correct. If it is too high the weeds will love you and your lawn!

A thick healthy lawn will not allow weeds in. A sickly thin lawn is an open invitation for the weeds to move in and take over.
